The Distance Between Us: A College Student's 10 Struggles with His Parents' Health and Well-Being

Ravi had just stepped into a new chapter of his life. Freshly graduated, he had bagged his first job with an IT company in Bengaluru. It was everything he had worked for during his four years in college. Yet, despite the excitement of securing a good position and moving to a bustling city, there was one thing that kept him up at night — the thought of leaving his parents, especially his mother, back in his hometown of Bhopal.

For Ravi, this was the first time he had to face life without his family around. It was a bittersweet moment — thrilled by the opportunity ahead, but torn between his new life and the worry over his parents’ health and well-being. Little did he know that the challenges he would face weren’t just about adapting to a new city or a demanding job, but about dealing with the emotional toll of distance from his aging parents, whose health was slowly declining.

1. The Weight of Distance

The first and most immediate challenge Ravi faced was the feeling of guilt that came with being far away from his parents. His mother, Asha, had always been his rock. But now, with her high blood pressure and arthritis, Ravi couldn’t help but feel like he was letting her down. No matter how many video calls he made or how much he reassured her, there was a gnawing feeling inside him that he wasn’t there when she needed him the most.

2. Medical Emergencies

One evening, Ravi’s phone buzzed with an unexpected call from his father, Raghav. Asha had fainted at home and had been rushed to the hospital. Ravi's heart sank as he heard the urgency in his father’s voice. In that moment, the distance felt unbearable. How could he not be there for his mother? The pain of not being able to physically care for her when she needed him made him feel powerless. Ravi’s thoughts raced as he wondered how long it would take him to book a flight and reach home.

3. Missing Doctor's Appointments

Asha had always kept her medical appointments, but now that Ravi was not around, his father, though well-meaning, struggled to keep track of them. Ravi used to be the one who would remind her about her appointments, help her prepare for them, and accompany her for tests. The fear of missing important health checks and growing concern about her ongoing health issues weighed heavily on his mind. Every time Ravi tried to call and check, he had to rely on his father’s updates, but he often wondered if there was more he could do.

4. The Inability to Monitor Her Medication

Asha had recently started a new set of medications for her condition, and Ravi knew that he could no longer monitor how well she was adhering to the treatment plan. He would call home regularly, asking if she was taking her medicines on time, but without being there, he could not truly know. What if she was skipping doses or feeling unwell without telling anyone? The anxiety of not being able to ensure her well-being gnawed at him.

5. Financial Strain on His Parents

Although Ravi had a steady job now, the financial burden of supporting his aging parents still weighed on him. His father, a retired school teacher, had a modest pension, but it wasn’t enough to cover Asha’s growing medical expenses. Ravi had always been a good son, sending money home every month, but it never felt like enough. There were days when he felt helpless, knowing his parents had limited financial resources, and the burden was entirely on his shoulders.

6. Emotional Toll on His Father

Raghav had always been a strong figure in Ravi’s life. But now, he could see the strain in his father’s voice during their phone calls. The weariness of managing everything alone — from cooking to household chores to keeping up with Asha’s medical needs — had started taking a toll. Ravi’s heart broke every time he heard his father’s tired voice. He could sense that his father was trying to hide his worries, but Ravi knew he was struggling. It was hard to be away when he couldn’t ease his father’s burden.

7. The Pressure to Balance Work and Family

Ravi’s job was demanding, with long hours at the office and frequent deadlines to meet. He was often exhausted, juggling between his responsibilities at work and his concern for his parents. Each time he was stuck in an office meeting or a work-related task, he felt like he was neglecting his duty as a son. The guilt of not being able to divide his time effectively left him feeling drained, both emotionally and physically.

8. Loneliness and Isolation

Though Ravi was surrounded by colleagues and friends in Bengaluru, he felt an acute sense of loneliness. Being away from his parents, especially during difficult times, left him feeling disconnected from everything he held dear. Every time he returned home for a brief visit, it felt like Asha and Raghav were fading a little more into the background of his life. The distance wasn’t just physical; it was emotional too. He missed their presence, their conversations, and the comfort of knowing they were nearby.

9. Worry About the Future

Ravi couldn’t ignore the fact that his parents were aging. His mother’s arthritis had progressed, and his father was showing signs of slowing down. What would happen if they both became seriously ill at the same time? Ravi wondered if he would be able to take the time off work to be with them. He feared that the distance would only grow as his parents aged, and he could already see how difficult it would be to manage everything alone.

10. The Burden of Saying Goodbye

When Ravi would visit home, saying goodbye to his parents was the hardest part. Asha, though always reassuring him to chase his dreams, would hold back her tears until Ravi left the house. Raghav would quietly pat him on the back, telling him to take care of himself. The look in their eyes, filled with both pride and sadness, haunted him long after he boarded his flight back to Bengaluru. It was as if their hearts were breaking, and so was his, but no one could say it out loud.

As Ravi sat in his small apartment in Bengaluru, trying to focus on the stack of files on his desk, his mind wandered back to his parents. The noise of the city felt distant, and his thoughts always returned to Bhopal — to his mother’s health, his father’s struggles, and the guilt of being away. But despite all the challenges, Ravi held onto one thing — the love and care he had for his parents.

He promised himself that no matter how far away he was, he would do everything he could to support them. Whether it was sending money, scheduling doctor’s appointments, or making sure they were emotionally supported, Ravi knew that he had to find a way to bridge the gap between them. Because, in the end, no amount of success in a new city could ever replace the comfort of knowing his parents were safe, healthy, and happy.

In the journey of life, we all face moments where we have to choose between the responsibilities of our careers and the ones we love. Ravi’s story is one of many young professionals today, navigating the complexities of balancing ambition with the emotional ties to family. It is a story that speaks to the heart — the silent sacrifices of those who venture far from home but carry their loved ones with them, every step of the way.
